Theoretically a 135mm lens is a 135mm lens, but the Vivitar is a longer focal length than the Nikkor. I also have a 1 year old that like to play with tripods, hence some non-exact framing here.

I think that would be cool, but I don't know how to do it. It would be cool to see a "difference" image where one is subtracted from the other to show only the difference. I've been thinking of doing some shoot outs, how stable is your camera/tripod set-up? If your 100% locked down the lenses "should" give the exact same picture. Oh, the 135 f2 makes it bigger, and has the same look as the 105 2.5 in the OOF areas, Smoooth and creamy. Both of mine say N/AI and I've seen other photos around here that say N/AIS.Ģ2 indicates Kino (aka Kiron) not Komine.Komine starts with # 28.

The Komine Vivitar all start with the serial number 22.Īround the mount of the Vivitar should be a designation for the version of Nikon mount. There is probably an AI version, but my a different manufacturer. The problem with Vivitar is that they change suppliers so often. So i have found one of these vivitars on craigslist here locally cheap, and im curious if anyone can help me to the extent is there an AI model? or are they all non AIĬause i want to buy but if it shouldnt be attached to my camera safely i dont wanna do it I do see the 135mm focal length as being a bit useful on DX for me however even though it seems very similar to the 105mm lens. That's true, Nantonos - I was treating them the same in my head and so typed them out as the same thing :P But from the serial numbers, its a pre-AI "K" version that has then been factory AI'ed. My late pre-AI 135, for example, has the same optical formula and coating as the AI version. Jb17kx The optical formula changed a little before the change to AI. In other words, you can't see any more in the shot with the 135 than you can in the one with the 105. Mrbwa1 Kinda mirrors what I found, the 135 makes things bigger than the 105 but it doesn't make them better. But like you said, it is a bit big and heavy. That may be explain why the images produced by my Q is sharper than the AI. I have 135/2.8 AI (black ) and 135/2.8 Q but I found that focusing is easier on the 135/2.8Q. I've used an E 135/2.8 as well, which I thought was pretty decent. though - that's why I'm particularly interested. The AI version adds another element over the Q.C. version would perform a bit better as well, but I figured this was a good fight as both lenses are only single coated.

Good point! My dad had a 135mm Series E years ago (yet another optical formula) that he eventually sold off. That'd be an interesting comparison, seeing as the optical formula changed. You've probably all heard this before, but the AI 135/2.8 is much smaller. Originally posted at 6:07PM, 21 February 2009 PDT All said, it's an exceptional lens, though a bit big and heavy.

It's biggest issues seems to be a propensity to fringe a tad more and worse bokeh when stopped down vs. The Nikkor 135mm f/2.8 is a very good lens, though not quite up to the standard of the 105mm in my mind. Of course, the Nikkor 135mm is a fine choice as well. It can probably be picked up a little cheaper as well. Overall, other than the weird 55mm filter threads, the Vivitar focuses closer and offers lighter weight and smaller size. The Nikkor seems to be relatively high contrast throughout.

I can see the the exposures are slightly different as well, so that can factor into judgments, but the Vivitar seems to maybe have just a trace less contrast, picking up greatly by f/5.6. I can't see much difference between the two, other than a very slightly different color balance. Nikkor 135mm vs Vivitar (Kino/Kiron) 135mm f/2.8:Ī virtual tie.
